How to Half Treble Crochet UK HTr (US - Half Double Crochet HDc)

Fiona Field • Feb 02, 2021

The Half Treble Crochet stitch, which is known as Half Double crochet in the US, is called such because it's half the height of the Treble (Double) stitch. It another of the basic crochet stitches that is used frequently in crochet patterns! If you'd like to understand the differences between the UK and US terms more clearly, click here.

The half treble crochet is worked just as the treble crochet with 2 exceptions; Once you've made your foundation chain, and before you make your first stitch, you bring your yarn over the hook, from back to front and then insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook to begin your first Half treble crochet (HTr).

The 1st difference between the Half Treble and the Treble crochet is that the turning chain (the chain worked before starting subsequent rows) is 2. The 2nd difference is that once you have yarned over and drawn up a loop, you simply yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Just like the other basic crochet stitches, you will be working into the stitches you made in the previous row by inserting your hook under booth loops of the stitch.

In some crochet patterns, you will ask you to work into only one or the other loops of the stitch which will be written like this: BLO or FLO, which means back loop only or front loop only. This will be made very clear in the pattern. If you don't see anything about working into different loops, you can safely assume that you are working into the whole stitch.
