40 Easy Crochet Baby Blanket Patterns
There really is nothing more special than creating a handmade gift for a new arrival that you know will be treasured for life.
I’m yet to meet someone who hasn’t wanted to stitch up something special and baby blankets tend to be the most commonly made projects for babies.
This pattern round up shares a huge choice of blanket patterns that are either already written for a baby blanket size, or can be made to that baby blanket size.
What is the best size for a baby blanket?
The usual size for a crochet baby blanket is 36″ by 36″ which allows the blanket to be folded for use in the pram. Some people opt to make a slightly larger baby blanket so that it can treasured and used for many years to come.
For more information about what size to make your blanket, click here to see my crochet blanket size chart which include the sizes for use in a crib, and recommended toddler sizes for blankets too.
Note – Crochet blankets, like any other type of bedding, should never be placed in a baby’s sleep environment unsupervised or without proper precautions as they could pose a suffocation risk or increase the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
What’s the best crochet stitch for a baby blanket?
The half double crochet stitch is the best choice for a quick and easy crochet baby blanket and it will create a no holes baby blanket too – perfect for those tiny fingers exploring the world by touch.
Some people consider the single crochet stitch as the quickest stitch to create a quick crochet baby blanket, but the half double crochet is slightly taller and will work up even quicker than just single crochet.
Whether you choose to create a blanket in either single crochet or half double crochet, both patterns are very simple to create in the size you want:
- create a chain to a length that is as wide as the blanket you want to create
- Sc or hdc in the 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across
- Turn
- Ch 1 (ch 1 does not count as a stich), sc or hdc in the same stitch as the chain 1 and in each stitch across.
- Simple repeat the same in each row until you have achieve the height of the blanket you want to create
