This free crochet beanie pattern was designed using a specially hand dyed yarn by High Desert Yarn, and is releasing as part of the Autumn Poppy Crochet Along, where 4 patterns were designed to highlight the beauty hand dyed yarn.
As had dyed yarn can be quite an investment, both Joanna of High Desert Yarn and I wanted to keep the yardage used in our patterns as low as possible, so this crochet beanie hat pattern is stitched up side-to-side to make that yarn go further.

Easy Crochet Beanie Pattern
Crochet beanie hats remain a popular crochet project, regardless your crochet skill level as they are so well used – they can be cosy and warm, and best thing is they tend to be a quick crochet project to complete.
This beanie pattern is worked from side-to-side and seams once the correct head circumference is reached which helps to keep this pattern suitable for all crochet skill levels. By working the pattern in this way also ensures that the amount of yarn used to complete is kept to a minimum too.

Recommended Yarn
This crochet beanie pattern was designed using DK weight/Size 3 yarn and can be recreated in any animal fibre or acrylic synthetic fibre that you can achieve the same gauge/tension with, without adjusting the pattern.
If you’d like to substitute the yarn for an alternative weight, click here to find out more about how to adjust a pattern achieve the same finished size.
To achieve the same slouchy fit and drape of the crochet fabric, it is recommended to recreate the pattern with a Size 3/DK weight yarn.
I used Cloudcroft Super Wash Merino hand dyed by High Desert Yarn in 2 shades that gave a great finished look:
- Autumn Poppy – a variegated yarn where the colour pools as you stitch it up
- Rose – a semi tonal yarn that matches one of the shades in the Autumn Poppy
